Richmond

America's Salt-free Capital

Richmond Old City Hall and Washington Monument

When we were planning this issue on healthy cooking, we turned to Richmond, Virginia, the salt-free capital of the country! More Penzeys customers are buying salt-free seasonings and spice blends here than anywhere else in America.

Of course, that is not Richmond's only claim to fame. The city is steeped in American history. This is where the fiery revolutionary Patrick Henry gave his famous "Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death" speech on the steps of St. John's Church in 1775. Richmond is home to the beautiful State Capitol Building designed by Thomas Jefferson. And the White House of the Confederacy still stands as testament to Richmond's role as capital of the Confederacy during the Civil War.

One hundred miles from the nation's capital, tucked between the ocean and the mountains, Richmond is rich in geographic diversity and cultural experiences. In the following pages, staff member Jack Weissmann captures the flavor of Richmond in beautiful photos. Here, you'll see Richmond at its springtime best, with flowering parks and gardens, antebellum homes, colorful shops, historic monuments, farmers markets, fish markets, festivals and museums. And Penzeys customers in and around Richmond help give a taste of the Salt-Free Capital by serving up a heaping helping of Southern hospitality, along with their favorite stories and recipes. Enjoy!
