This pool was originally filled with about a foot and a half of water, but that didn't stop these kids (Serge's' son Daniel is in the green shirt). They found wastebaskets from the motel and emptied the water in assembly line fashion. "I was amazed that they got every last drop of water," says our photographer Jerry.
We met Jesus Beltran at the El Camino Motel cookout and we were lucky enough to have him share his father's chilaquiles recipe with us. "Chilaquiles are a way to use up leftover tortillas. My father taught me how to make these for us in Tijuana. See, my Mom died when I was about three years old, so my Dad raised us on his own."
